Where our batana oil comes from
Batana is extracted from the fruit of Elaeis oleifera, the American oil palm. It is not the oil palm we know in Europe, but its rarer American cousin, harvested in the wild.
It grows in La Moskitia, a region of forest and lagoons on the Caribbean coast of Honduras. Miskito women have been preparing batana by hand there for generations. Harvesting, preparing, pressing: hours of work for a little thick golden oil. The craft is passed from mother to daughter.
